Close to a year ago, GENIVI embarked on a project to realign its mission and technical deliverables to the needs of the automotive, in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) industry. The project began with personal interviews with senior leaders of many of the top 20 automakers in the world. The insights gained from these interviews have now mapped to four enhancements to GENIVI’s strategy and deliverables.

Not surprisingly, automakers were concerned about smart device connectivity in the car and with that connectivity, the ability to quickly deliver a growing set of consumer electronic features desired by the consumer. They needed a flexible yet robust platform upon which they could rapidly prototype and deliver consumer requests. GENIVI has evolved to meet this need by producing a pre-integrated platform that combines individual, open source software components with standard interfaces. The flexible architecture underpinning this platform allows for a robust development platform and also allows automakers and their suppliers to combine open source and best-in-class commercial software to produce a product that aligns directly with their consumer’s needs.

A second insight gained from the interviews was the gradual evolution of many automakers to a different business model driving their development of IVI software. As the costs and complexity of a continually growing base of IVI code continues to spiral out of control, some automakers are looking to take more of the product development in-house and thus, require maximum transparency into the code provided by their suppliers and software specialists. GENIVI’s growing support for using open source software in the IVI middleware meets both of these needs. And GENIVI is redoubling its efforts to make all software produced in the GENIVI community fully available and customizable to anybody in the industry, whether they are a GENIVI member or not.

A third insight provided by the automakers during the interview was the importance of leveraging open standards. GENIVI has confirmed its goal to be an open standard for aligning consumer electronics and automotive software development cycles. Automakers and suppliers report that second and third programs using GENIVI software have closed the gap between these development cycles that can be as many as two to three years apart. This means software gets done faster through the reuse of previously developed and validated software so that attention can be given to end-consumer features that really make the difference to the consumer.

A final insight to address – recognizing there were many more that could be discussed – is the growing popularity among automakers of redeploying a single IVI software platform on a variety of hardware platforms to meet performance requirements of varying models and brands. GENIVI’s standard, pre-integrated platform serves as a great starting point and GENIVI’s open source technology approach also frees automakers and their suppliers to customize that platform to meet their individual requirements. The combination of GENIVI’s open source software components, standard interfaces, flexible architecture and pre-integrated IVI platform give automakers and their suppliers the maximum flexibility to design/develop once and redeploy many times with limited software enhancements required by different hardware platforms.

Through the good work of alliance leaders and members, GENIVI’s refined strategy and relevant technical deliverables are helping automakers and their suppliers to quickly deliver consumer-requested features with their preferred business model. They receive from GENIVI the open standards they desire and are able to deliver IVI systems for a variety of models in a rapid and flexible way. GENIVI is very appreciative of the input provided by all the automakers during the survey and believes the adjustments made will result in even greater value delivered to the industry.

What Has GENIVI Delivered Lately and What is Yet to Come?

GENIVI continues to expand its footprint in the IVI industry through a growing number of production deliveries supported by an increasing number of commercially available solutions worldwide. In the meantime, GENIVI and its members are hard at work delivering new and better software to the industry that promotes faster time to market, higher software quality, and reduced development costs for any current and future IVI software program.

In a recent survey completed among many of the leading IVI software suppliers, GENIVI solutions are on the road in over 20 brand/model/year combinations on four continents with the potential of 20 more combinations in the next one to two years. Multiple commercial IVI software solutions are available in every major automotive geography worldwide with counts exceeding 30 unique products using GENIVI technologies. So, the adoption of GENIVI technology in both commercial offerings and in production programs is mature and increasing throughout the world.

But GENIVI is not resting on its laurels; through its hosted, open source code projects (projects.genivi.org), the alliance is aggressively building out new software functionality to further enhance the value of GENIVI’s IVI middleware. In the past year, GENIVI has developed new software components that manage media functions in an IVI system and has expanded its work on the important application lifecycle management functionality. GENIVI will soon deliver a standard interface to Google’s Android Auto functionality resulting in the ability to call Android Auto features from a GENIVI platform. And, through Ford’s leadership and their development partners, the GENIVI-hosted SmartDeviceLink project continues to gain interest from other automakers such as Toyota.

GENIVI also completed an important technology demonstrator called the GENIVI Demo Platform (GDP). While not intended to be a full IVI distribution, the GDP is an excellent and highly accessible tool for understanding how the GENIVI middleware operates, how its standard interfaces work, and how to build new software inside or on top of the platform. The GDP has strong support from three different silicon manufacturers supporting the ability to deploy GENIVI software across multiple hardware platforms to meet performance and cost goals.

GENIVI is looking ahead to a number of new development projects through the work of its members and through funding the completion of new software components. Upcoming priorities for GENIVI include software management features and securely updating software over-the-air (SOTA). Adopters can expect an enhancement of the media management functions to include video management features. GENIVI member companies are talking about deliveries of remote vehicle interaction (RVI) functionality and enhanced application framework capabilities. And, as with all GENIVI software, these deliveries will be available to members and non-members alike through publicly hosted projects.

GENIVI technology deliverables are finding their way in an increasing number of production programs and in a growing number of commercially available IVI software solutions from suppliers worldwide. IVI stakeholders can expect new and enhanced software components, more open implementations of vehicle-based standards, and more hands-on demonstration tools that make GENIVI’s technology tangible for prototyping and for adoption.

For the last year and a half, GENIVI members have worked with the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) to define standard interfaces for vehicle data which are consistent with the standard interfaces already implemented and openly available in GENIVI open projects. In the context of the W3C Automotive and Web Platform Business Group, a specification describing the vehicle data interfaces and a second specification describing the vehicle information API were produced and delivered at GENIVI's October 2014 All Member Meeting. This year, a W3C working group was established to finalize these specifications into official W3C, worldwide standards. Producing a worldwide standard involves a tremendous amount of work. The draft specifications are available here and GENIVI’s implementation is available here.

A new focus for the W3C Automotive and Web Platform Business Group is to produce a standard interface for vehicle navigation. And, not surprisingly, the W3C has approached GENIVI to explore the navigation API work done in our Location Based Services Expert Group (LBS-EG). The LBS APIs have been proven as mature through use in commercial products and are thus, a great starting point for the W3C standardization work. In order to support the collaboration with W3C, full access to relevant information such as use cases, requirements and full code documentation is being granted on GENIVI's open projects public wiki.

The APIs developed by the LBS-EG are:

Navigation Core including Location Input, Route Calculation, Route Guidance

Map Viewer including Map Rendering and View Control

Point Of Interest (POI) providing a POI Search interface with a content access module mechanism allowing to extend a search to external data sources

Traffic Info providing a TrafficIncidentsService

Positioning which consists of GNSSService, SensorsService and EnhancedPositionService.

The code produced by LBS-EG participants includes a navigation application and a demo application called Fuel Stop Advisor which exercises the various interfaces. Also available are proofs of concept that demonstrate the main features of the LBS interfaces such as point of interest, traffic information and positioning.

While not all of GENIVI’s technical work is likely to be adopted as international standards, GENIVI continues to make a huge impact on the automotive industry through the hard work of all of our expert groups.

Many people assume the Android Auto and Apple CarPlay™ implementations will cover all connected smartphone needs and GENIVI is supporting the availability of both options on GENIVI based systems. For that reason GENIVI would like to highlight what is unique about the device-link style, of which SmartDeviceLink is the leading open source example. This type of protocol complements the projection-style app sharing offered by MirrorLink™, CarPlay and Android Auto while SDL focuses on building an application connectivity standard that is portable across multiple phone and infotainment system standards.

Let’s highlight the difference in some more detail. You are probably aware that MirrorLink™ mirrors the screen of the handheld device onto the infotainment display and that Android Auto has sometimes been referred to as a projection function.

In contrast, a device-link type of protocol operates primarily with abstract commands. For example, you might see the device telling the infotainment system: Please place a “play,” “pause” and “volume” control on the screen (yes, politeness is assumed to be required technology behavior in the future). Note that the device does not specify the exact position or graphical appearance of those controls. Furthermore it may request: Please prepare your built-in speech control system to listen for the commands “input address” and “stop navigation.”

Once the user interacts with HMI in the car, the infotainment system tells the application on the handheld device which of the functions was activated by the user. For example: the user activated “play” or said “stop navigation.”

This is quite different from the low-level information exchange of projection-style protocols, which is more like: The user pressed the screen at coordinate X=15, Y=28, or sending the actual microphone recorded audio to the device for speech interpretation. Consider, for example, how difficult it is for the infotainment system to know at that point whether the particular recorded voice contains a speech command that is relevant for the connected device and not to some built-in function.

A device-link type protocol thereby enables car OEMs to achieve a deeper level of functional integration between the handheld device and the infotainment system and to follow the graphical and interaction principles of the main user interface. Among other things OEMs can use their extensive experience to design for minimal driver distraction.

A projection-style protocol conversely shares graphical user interfaces directly as they are generated on a handheld device. The applications might be aware that they are running in the automotive context, and therefore provide a different HMI than normal, or they might offer applications without any difference. This style often enables a simpler integration into a system because close to all of the logic is implemented in the device application. It allows for quick growth and updates of the application space and can provide consistency with the smartphone manufacturer's signature behavior.

Also, notice that a projection of an application with touch-screen focus will only work smoothly if the in-car display interaction is also through a touch screen. Other physical controls are much easier integrated with an abstract protocol like SDL.

We have seen that two different approaches to consumer device connectivity provide different advantages. System designers should consider both principles, and the standards-focused GENIVI Alliance will support multiple choices in those areas where it increases system value.

GENIVI recently launched a Tools Team which coordinates the activities of selection, adoption, adaptation, creation and maintenance of the tools that help make the GENIVI development activities more efficient. The team bases its choice of implementation technologies (e.g., supported operating systems) on the specific needs of GENIVI Alliance members and the IVI industry at-large.

People and teams working in and with GENIVI use a wide range of software development tools to write code and to create a common base that is easily reusable. These tools are easily available and most are widely used, so they should be familiar to those who may be new to GENIVI but are familiar with software development in general.

The Tools Team specifically concentrates on the following areas:

Tools for building software - Individual parts and their integration into the development environments for GENIVI Baselines and GENIVI Demo Platform.
Examples include Yamaica (CommonAPI code generators and tools), Franca IDL tools and their integration into an IDE as well joint tooling projects such as AUTOSAR IoNAS.

Tools for UML modeling - Consistency checkers and content generators for the GENIVI UML model. Examples include the Enterprise Architect Add-In (for consistency checks and compliance document generation), Franca Validator as well as Document Generator.

Tools for debugging and analysis - Data loggers, general debuggers, simulation tools, etc. Examples include the DLT Viewer, D-Bus monitor and their integration into an IDE.

Tools for automated testing - Tools involved in the creation and execution of automated tests for GENIVI software projects and Baselines.

All Tools Team activities are taking place in the open and the team welcomes contributions and participation from both GENIVI members and the wider community.
The following is a reprint of a GENIVI-related blog in Embedded Computing Design.

In a recent survey of software decision-makers in many of the top 20 automakers, the issue of vehicle security was repeatedly mentioned as a growing challenge. Clearly, as the car becomes more connected to itself, to other vehicles, to intelligent infrastructure, and to the automaker’s own data cloud, the security challenge mushrooms into a nontrivial problem to be solved.

Or does it? Can’t automakers just inherit the “state-of-the-art” security in standard IT environments where connected servers are already dealing with similar issues introduced by expanding connectivity? After all, aren’t vehicles these days just like “connected computers” with wheels?

Certainly, there is much to learn from current threat models available from a variety of sources both inside and outside of the automotive industry. The GENIVI Alliance Security Team has collaborated with US- and Europe-based organizations to leverage both general and automotive-specific threat definitions to build out the Alliance’s own Threat Model. But are there inherent challenges to vehicle security that makes GENIVI’s job of defining a secure architecture for in-vehicle systems a really difficult job? Let’s explore a few.

Vehicles are different from standard IT servers in many ways and also differ from consumer electronic (CE) devices. First, vehicles are required to simultaneously support multiple connection methodologies that each represent a unique channel for breach – such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GSM, and NFC – and do all of that both natively and via a connected smartphone. Second, the CPU power, available memory, and power consumption of a vehicle headunit (computer) is optimized for a vehicle environment that severely limits the applicability of strong algorithms and complex cybersecurity programs that are typically executed on servers. Third, most vehicles must provide server functions (e.g., mirroring, USB master, Bluetooth server, etc.) and, like CE devices, be a client of services provided both inside and outside the vehicle. Fourth, because of certain safety requirements (e.g., availability of a rearview camera display), vehicles have a “fast boot” requirement that hinders standard IT approaches such as “startup” security scans. And finally, because of the 10-plus year lifecycle of a vehicle, automakers must create a secure approach for repeated software updates, most of which must be done securely over the air.

As you can see from just a few of the long list of unique characteristics, securing a connected vehicle is not a simple task. While general security approaches are available in standard IT and other industries, a significant amount of work is needed to apply those general approaches to the unique and ever-changing context of a connected vehicle. The GENIVI Alliance has accepted the challenge and welcomes additional collaboration on this topic in the context of its Security Team. To get involved with securing the connected car, email security@mail.genivi.org.
