Alliance Delivers Connected Vehicle Software
</STRONG></H2>
<DIV>Responding to a growing need for vehicle
connectivity solutions in the auto industry, the
GENIVI Alliance has moved aggressively toward the
delivery of its Remote Vehicle Interaction (RVI)
technologies. After launching an RVI Expert Group
in December of last year, the group has progressed
rapidly and has open source software in place for
many important vehicle connectivity use
cases.<BR><BR> RVI is designed to be a platform,
to be open, and to be a result of broad
collaboration within the industry. As a platform,
the goal is to specify, standardize, and implement
core connectivity protocols and services between
the in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) system and any
number of remote entities (smart homes, cities,
infrastructure, etc.). RVI is intended to use
proven open source technologies to ensure that all
protocols and services can be implemented securely
and robustly. And finally, RVI will reflect
standardization work already in progress with
organizations like World Wide Web Consortium
(W3C), Open Connectivity Foundation (OCF), and
many others.<BR><BR> RVI's core functionality
enables three macro use cases: remote car control,
connectivity to big data servers, and
software/firmware over the air updates
(SOTA/FOTA). The core components handle not only
the basic connectivity features, but also
authentication, authorization, service discovery
and service invocation. The remote car control
components handle vehicle integration, service
protocol and Web services based on W3C standards.
RVI big data handles data collection including a
plan to integrate to AUTOSAR components for ECU
and sensor data. Big data also handles data
transmission, data reporting and data analytics.
SOTA/FOTA components provide client-side
functionality and software management as well as
the SOTA server and integration/adoption by
vendors and other open source projects.<BR><BR>
GENIVI is actively engaging startups, academia,
non-automotive software providers as well as its
primary automotive community to rapidly adopt and
build-out the RVI features. RVI is already
integrated into the GENIVI Development Platform
(GDP). At the recent GENIVI member meeting in
Paris, a demonstration of the RVI linking a Land
Rover and a smart home gateway produced by OCF was
shown as a proof of concept. More demonstrations
linking cars to cities, to infrastructure and to
other cars are in the works. RVI is a
completely open project and GENIVI welcomes
individuals and companies to join the effort.

Moving to github</STRONG></H2>
<DIV>For several years, GENIVI has maintained a
git repository for its code and for other code
hosted in GENIVI open source projects. In an
attempt to engage with more developers both inside
and outside the automotive community, GENIVI has
decided to migrate GENIVI projects into a
GENIVI-branded section of the github community (<A
style="color: rgb(43, 166, 203); text-decoration: none;"
href="https://github.com/genivi"
target="_blank"><STRONG>https://github.com/genivi</STRONG></A>).
This migration will occur over time and GENIVI
will maintain its current git repository for some
time.<BR> <BR> Thousands of developers use
github as their "development home" and login
daily. One rationale for moving to github is
to lower the bar of entry for many of these
non-automotive developers to work within the
GENIVI community. A second rationale is to
simplify and standardize the way in which GENIVI
as a community works with code around the github

purpose of its software platform, the GENIVI Demo
Platform (GDP) will be renamed and reworked to

Platform</STRONG></A> (still GDP). GDP is no
longer just focused on demonstrating how GENIVI

environment where rapid prototyping, testing and
experimentation can occur.<BR> <BR> The GDP
is a collection of individual IVI software
components, standard interfaces, and a simple user
interface and reference applications that
collectively build and run on one of several
hardware platforms. In addition to the Renesas
Porter and Intel Minnowboard, the GDP also runs on
the Raspberry Pi2 board, making it easy and
inexpensive to reproduce a GENIVI development

26-29 April. Of the many highlights from the week,

audience enjoyed keynotes from very senior leaders
from two of GENIVI's most active adopting
organizations: Renault Nissan and PSA Groupe. Mr.

participants noted that the technical break-out

always, the hands-on training was also popular and
with the recent joining of four new members
experienced in the cybersecurity area, GENIVI has
plans to accelerate its work on vehicle
security.<BR> <BR> Always a highlight is the
Member Showcase and Networking Reception. Several
attendees commented that the networking during the
showcase event was exceptional. Nearly 40
organizations showed demonstrations of GENIVI
technologies available in the market (or in open
source) today.<BR> <BR> Finally, the media
and press activities at GENIVI events have grown
significantly over the last year. GENIVI welcomed
17 very inquisitive press and media
representatives midweek to a media briefing that
covered the alliance achievements and future

Intern Program Launched</H2>
<DIV>The GENIVI board of directors recently
approved funding for two part-time interns from
Portland State University to be overseen by the
GENIVI IT Manager. Because of the proximity to the
campus, the positions will be located at the
Jaguar Land Rover facility in Portland, Oregon.
The initial positions will be focused on GENIVI's
IT infrastructure migration to its new hosting
environment in Portland. Based on the success of
this pilot program, GENIVI hopes to extend the
program by including existing intern programs in
our members and other interested universities.<BR>
