<div>Delivered and enhanced by the GENIVI community, the full release of GDP 12 will be announced on 25 April and will include a number of new features that will be shared on the formal release date.<br>
<br>
For those who may not have heard, the GDP has been chosen to participate in the Google Summer of Code (GSoC) program and student developers will use the GDP 12 as a basis for projects. The GSoC is a global program focused on bringing more student developers into open source software development. Students work with an open source organization on a three-month programming project during their school break, and the GDP was one of 201 applications accepted among 400 applicants.<br>
<br>
The GDP is an open, community-developed, deliverable involving many organizations inside and outside of the GENIVI membership. Contributions by individuals and organizations are essential to the future success of the GDP and GENIVI welcomes all member and open source community efforts in the areas of market feedback, testing, bug reporting and patching and requesting new features to advance GDP development (technical discussions occurring on <a href="http://lists.genivi.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/genivi-projects" style="color: #2ba6cb;text-decoration: none;">genivi-projects</a> email list and on <a href="https://at.projects.genivi.org/jira/browse/GDP-154" style="color: #2ba6cb;text-decoration: none;">Jira trackers</a>).<br>

Craig is the Director of Industry Alliances and Marketing at Intel Corp. and is responsible for marketing strategies and industry engagements for Intel’s Transportation Solutions Division. He is also responsible for divisional branding, naming, sponsorships, public speaking, social media, web, press and analysts relations and is Intel’s voice for automotive across multiple alliances. <div>Wayland-ivi-extension has been one of the most active of all GENIVI-hosted projects. It is well-connected to other popular open source projects like Weston and Qt which brings both benefits and challenges. This article discusses the background of the project and also provides a preview of some of the discussions to be held at the upcoming GENIVI All Member Meeting on this subject.<br>
<br>
In the past, IVI devices had special hardware to combine graphic content from several applications, create a final image and present it on the display. Although the basic functionality provided by such composition hardware is very similar, it is usually controlled by a proprietary interface. This limited the reuse of the window manager across different projects.<br>
<br>
To overcome this limitation, the GENIVI Media and Graphics Expert Group defined IVI Layer Management Interface (ilm-interface) and provided a reference implementation creating an abstraction layer to the proprietary interface of the composition hardware which can be used as a plug-in of LayerManager.<br>
<br>
In parallel to the development of LayerManager, a big change in the desktop graphic stack was forming around a new approach called wayland. Wayland is an alternative to an old and complex X11 technology. Many Linux distributions (e.g., Fedora) use wayland as a standard display protocol.<br>
<br>
GENIVI has followed the development of wayland from the beginning and the first LayerManager releases supported wayland. LayerManager was acting as a wayland compositor charged with implementing the service side of the wayland protocols and driving the display. However, maintaining a compositor is not an easy task and thought was given to making use of Weston, a reference implementation of the Wayland compositor, in IVI systems.<br>
<br>
Weston has a well-defined plug-in infrastructure and it was decided to create an IVI plug-in to support IVI window manager use-cases, namely IVI-Shell.<br>
Today IVI-Shell is part of the Weston repository. Basically it provides two things: ability to identify application surfaces by unique numeric ID and to control scene composition with a simple layout interface. Having this in place allowed us to define and implement the Wayland protocol, which can be used from the IVI window manager to control the composition.<br>
<br>
The Wayland-ivi-extension project provides implementation of client and server side of the protocol (called: ivi-controller protocol) along with the implementation of the well-known ilm interface from LayerManager, which is now a wrapper over the client side of ivi-controller protocol.<br>
<br>
The ivi-controller protocol is almost 4 years old and during this time many developers have gained experience with it. There are new use-cases and requirements for IVI platforms like virtualization and support for a wide range of third party app stores. This also has an impact on graphics, in particular, to window management. Graphic stacks in open source continue to evolve and the project needs to stay up with those advances.<br>
<br>
During the All Member Meeting session in Birmingham, the community will gather to discuss these and related topics to keep these projects at the forefront of active GENIVI development efforts.</div>

<strong>GENIVI Panel Session: “Smart Cities Get Smarter with Vehicle Data.”</strong><br>
Abstract: Cities are making good progress in planning for the future wave of urbanization. Preparing for autonomous vehicles has forced cities to explore the benefits and challenges of big data implementations. Connected vehicle data, when consolidated with city transportation data, will be the basis for technology solutions replacing more asphalt.
