<div>GENIVI is pleased to welcome new board president, Darren Benjamin. Darren is a Senior Development Manager at the Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) Open Software Technology Center in Portland, Oregon, and is leading a five plus year effort in Linux and open source at JLR with Linux-based infotainment systems on the road in multiple vehicles. He previously worked for P3 Group and served as Toyota's System Architect on their 17CY program and as a vice president at Teligent Telecom/Nabla Communications, Inc. Darren has extensive volunteer management experience with the Kramden Institute and other nonprofits. He holds degrees in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics from Stellenbosch University in Cape Town, South Africa.<br>

Darren will complete the remainder of Matt Jones’ term as president. We would like to thank Matt Jones for his service on the board.</div>

Once again it is that time of year when GENIVI begins preparing for the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the largest networking event of the year for both GENIVI and its member community. The alliance’s activities continue to grow and as a result, we want to provide you with the latest information to consider and to share with your colleagues as you consider your plans for CES2017. <br>

<strong>GENIVI CES Networking Reception </strong><br>
On the evening of 5 January, GENIVI will host its seventh annual CES Networking Reception at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas. GENIVI has secured several penthouse suites overlooking the Las Vegas strip and famous Bellagio fountains. This new venue allows GENIVI to host a number of software proof-of-concept / work-in-progress implementations. The reception will open at 6 p.m. and run until 9 p.m.<br>

<strong>GENIVI and SAE “Connect2Vehicle” Full Day Conference</strong><br>
On 5 January (9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.), GENIVI and SAE International will be hosting an all-day supersession at CES2017. The “Connect2Car” program will be delivering innovative technology panel sessions and a hands-on “how to” session for connected car and IVI enthusiasts; all delivered by key technology influencers in the industry. With an audience of over 350 expected, GENIVI will present two panel sessions in the morning, followed by SAE presenting two sessions in the afternoon.<br>

<div>GENIVI has recently signed an agreement with Techstars Mobility of Detroit, Michigan, to strengthen the relationship between startup companies, focusing on the future of mobility and connected car solutions, and the automotive industry. Companies in good standing in the Techstars Mobility program, focusing on next-generation mobility and transportation solutions, can join the GENIVI Startup Associate Member (SAM) Program at no cost for the first year. This membership will provide the startup companies with access to the GENIVI member community and broader visibility to the IVI and connected vehicle ecosystem. Meanwhile, GENIVI members will have an opportunity to work with entrepreneurial companies who are bringing new, innovative ideas to the rapidly changing mobility and transportation industry.<br>
<br>
The GENIVI SAM Program, now with over 30 member companies, encourages immediate, active participation in GENIVI technical and business activities by startups as they develop their first automotive products. The companies are introduced to the IVI and connected vehicle software context, and receive technical direction and guidance in the development or re-engineering of their prototype to meet automotive requirements.<br>

At the fall GENIVI All Member Meeting, participants heard from some of the startup organizations and a “Startup Alley” was featured at the GENIVI Member Showcase where startups showcased their products and/or approach. <div>At the end of October, GENIVI announced the GENIVI Development Platform (GDP) 11 Release Candidate 3 (RC3) moving the GDP from a demonstrator to a true development platform. The new <a href="https://at.projects.genivi.org/wiki/display/WIK4/2016/10/14/Enhanced+GDP+Moves+from+a+Demonstrator+to+True+Development+Platform+with+RC3" style="color: #2ba6cb;text-decoration: none;">GDP 11 RC3</a> serves as an essential tool allowing a broad base of developers to participate in open source development that produces innovative and mature code; and provides an “automotive context” to assist with testing, prototyping, enhancing and deploying IVI and connected car software.<br>

Delivered and enhanced by the GENIVI community, the new GDP 11 RC3 features include:

<li>Enhanced user experience with GENIVI-branded GUI and configurable application launcher</li>
<li>Enriched Software Development Environment (including SDK)</li>
<li>Improved GENIVI Baseline consistent with v.11 of the GENIVI Platform Compliance Specification</li>

GENIVI has provided two release candidates for prospective adopters who may have different goals. GDP 11 RC2 gives adopters a more stable experience given the weeks of testing on multiple hardware boards, though without the new user interface and application launcher. GDP 11 RC3 gives adopters the absolute latest set of features including the new user interface and application launcher, though the stability of this candidate is still being proven.<br>

<div>In July, GENIVI launched a Challenge Grant Program designed to accelerate code contribution to the GENIVI Development Platform (GDP) and promote engagement within the alliance’s development community. A full-featured and easier-to-use GDP not only enables a broader base of developers to participate in the GENIVI development community, but also produces innovative and quality code making the GDP even better.<br>
<br>
To date, the alliance has received strong response to the Challenge Grant Program and some of the new features currently in development include adding a more feature-rich browser, improved location based services (navigation) APIs, and enhancements to the software-over-the-air capabilities of the GDP. The expectation is that all of these features will be incorporated into the next major GDP release (v12) in April/May 2017.<br>

<div>GENIVI has announced the availability of contributed open source code for a vehicle simulator. The GENIVI Vehicle Simulator (GVS) project is the most comprehensive open source vehicle simulator available and its first use will be to test the new GENIVI Development Platform (GDP) user interface in a virtually simulated environment which will help GENIVI identify and execute necessary design changes quickly and efficiently.<br>

The <a href="http://genivi.us7.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=86e1199a4a185a08b9d8db1d7&id=32139b397e&e=4206d1e26d" target="_blank" style="color: #2ba6cb;text-decoration: none;">GVS project</a> and initial source code provides an open source, extensible driving simulator that assists adopters to safely develop and test the user interface of an IVI system under simulated driving conditions. Additionally, the GVS provides a realistic driving experience with a number of unique features including triggering obstacles and infraction logging and review.<br>
